In order to identify
the number and the types of entries in dictionaries of idiomatic expressions,
the purpose of this study was to compare four relevant dictionaries. Those
selected were Oxford Dictionary of English Idioms: ODEI (1993); Oxford Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs:ODPV (1993); Longman Dictionary of
English Idioms: LDEI (1979); and Longman Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs:
LDPV (1983). To complete the study, all the entries of each dictionary were
typed into the author’s personal computer and then analyzed. The results
revealed the following: (1) The actual number of entries in ODEI (1993),
ODPV (1993), and LDPV (1983) are, respectively, smaller than the
published number indicated in the dictionaries, while that in LDEI (1979)
is greater than the published number. (2) Among the dictionaries, ODPV
(1993) is characterized by its employment of “Complex idioms” in the entries,
while LDPV (1983) includes “Verb + Adjective” and “Verb + Pronoun” in the
entries, and then “Complex idioms” in the sub-entries. (3) The method of
dealing with “Complex idioms,” characterizing the entries in ODPV (1993)
and the sub-entries in LDPV (1983), affects the format and appearance of
the dictionaries.
